The Truth About Blue Wedding Flowers (Especially in Ohio)

Arrangement of flowers for table

I’ll confess something right away — I love blue.

Carolina blue (a nod to my North Carolina roots), smoky blue, denim blue, navy — if it’s blue, I’m drawn to it.

But here’s the honest truth from the field: Blue flowers are rare.

Not “hard to find at the wholesaler” rare.
Biologically rare.

Why Blue Is So Uncommon in Nature

True blue pigment is unusual in the plant world. While we do grow some beautiful blue-leaning blooms in Ohio — larkspur, nigella, certain delphiniums — their bloom windows are specific and often brief.

Hydrangeas can produce stunning blue tones, but here in Ohio they don’t typically bloom until June or later. Nigella offers soft blue petals for a short moment, though its sculptural seed pods are often the true star. Larkspur can be breathtaking — when conditions cooperate.

And dyed blue flowers? We’ll just say they rarely feel natural.

A Seasonal Approach to Blue

Rather than forcing flowers to meet a color demand, we design with intention.

If blue is important to you, we may feature it where it carries the most visual impact — perhaps in the bridal bouquet or personal flowers — and allow the rest of the design to support that palette through thoughtful layering.

White blooms in blue vessels.
Dusty blue textiles.
Soft gray-green foliage like dusty miller.
Cool-toned greenery.
Layered whites and creams with subtle blue undertones.

When handled this way, blue becomes refined rather than overwhelming.

Intentional rather than literal.

Designing With Nature, Not Against It

At Nestor Flower Farm, we design within the rhythm of the season. That means honoring what is naturally blooming in Ohio during your wedding week.

When blue is available at its peak, we use it beautifully.

When it isn’t, we create a cohesive palette that still feels true to your vision — without asking flowers to be something they’re not.

Because the most compelling designs don’t rely on a single color.
They rely on balance.

If you’re drawn to blue for your wedding and want to explore how it can be interpreted seasonally, we would love to talk about your date and what’s blooming at that time.
