Surviving Ohio’s Climate: Growing Ranunculus for Spring Weddings

If you’ve ever held a ranunculus bloom, you understand the obsession.

These ruffled beauties look like layers of tissue paper and ballet tutus — petal upon petal, impossibly intricate. Along with anemones, they’re among the most requested flowers for spring weddings.

And for good reason.

But here’s the truth about growing ranunculus in Ohio:

They’re divas.

Why Ranunculus Are So Challenging Here

Ranunculus crave a climate that simply doesn’t exist naturally in Ohio. They prefer steady, cool temperatures — daytime highs in the mid-50s to low-60s — for 12 to 16 weeks while developing from corm to bloom.

Too cold, and they stall.
Too warm, and they shut down.

Waiting until our last frost to plant outdoors means they’ll meet summer heat before ever reaching their peak. Growing them indoors? Too warm there, too. These blooms demand precision.

Enter the Hoophouse

The solution for us has been protected growing.

While autumn fades and winter settles in outside, the hoophouse quietly nurtures spring. Even when temperatures drop well below freezing outdoors, inside those protective walls rows of ranunculus are growing steadily — believing they’re living in a gentle Mediterranean spring.

It’s careful timing.
It’s climate management.
It’s patience.

But when those first perfect blooms unfurl just in time for May weddings, every bit of planning is worth it.

Why It Matters for Your Wedding

Growing ranunculus successfully in Ohio requires intention and infrastructure. Because we plan ahead and protect our early crops, our spring couples have access to blooms harvested at their peak — fresh, vibrant, and full of life.

These are not flowers shipped from across the world to meet a calendar demand.

They are flowers grown specifically for the season we’re in.

At Nestor Flower Farm, our early wedding season (May and early June) often features ranunculus and anemones as key players in garden-inspired bouquets and centerpieces.

If you’re planning a spring wedding within 100 miles of Ashland and love the layered romance of ranunculus, we would be honored to design with them at their absolute best.
