Here in Ohio, waiting for the last frost seems like it takes forever. That’s why I start my seeds indoors as early as January. By the time other local flowers are just beginning to emerge, I’m already harvesting armloads of blooms.
In the past I started my seeds with a good potting mix but I took a mini workshop yesterday that has changed how I look at starting flowers from seeds. If you’re not familiar with Erin Benzakein at Floret, she’s genuinely one of the best resources in the flower farming world. Everything she teaches comes from real experience and rigorous testing on her own farm. Right now, she’s offering a free mini workshop and download all about seed starting soil mixes at https://workshop.floretflowers.com/potting-soil-opt-in You just need to sign up, and there’s no sales pitch attached. I took the workshop and it was amazing.
One thing I’ve learned from experience: Floret’s free workshops and resources sometimes are only available for a limited time and might not run again for a while. So if this interests you, I’d encourage you to sign up now. Having this knowledge will set you up for much greater success when you do dive in.
Whether you grow a few trays for your own garden or dream of cutting armloads of blooms, understanding the fundamentals of seed starting mix will make all the difference in your results.
Happy Planting,
MaryAnne
