When people think about wedding flowers, they usually imagine the blooms first.
The roses.
The peonies.
The lilies.
But every once in a while, it’s the foliage that makes an arrangement unforgettable.
This design was inspired by one of my favorite shrubs growing here on the farm—wine ninebark. For just a short window each summer, its deep wine-colored branches are absolutely breathtaking. Against those rich, dramatic leaves, soft pink lilies, blush stock, white delphinium, and yarrow the ninebark seems to glow.
That’s one of the joys of growing flowers instead of simply ordering them.
I can walk through the garden and notice something that’s especially beautiful that morning. Maybe it’s a shrub that’s putting on its best color. Maybe it’s a patch of stock that’s just reaching perfection. Maybe it’s a handful of lilies opening all at once. Those moments become the inspiration for the arrangement.
Every design reflects what the garden is offering that week.
No recipe.
No shipping boxes.
Just flowers and foliage at their seasonal peak.
One of my favorite parts of this arrangement is how natural it feels. The branches reach outward as though they’re still growing, while the flowers nestle comfortably among them. Nothing feels forced, and that’s exactly the look I love creating for weddings—romantic, abundant, and connected to the season.
It’s a reminder that beautiful floral design isn’t just about individual flowers.
Sometimes the most memorable ingredient is the one growing quietly in the background.
