When I say fresh flowers, I don’t simply mean flowers that were recently purchased from a wholesaler. I mean flowers grown here in Ohio, in the same soil and weather that shape the rest of the garden.
And there is a difference.
By the time I am standing at my design table with a bucket of flowers from the farm, I already know those flowers intimately. I have watched them grow. I know how they open. I know which ones are delicate and which ones can hold their own. I know which flowers are going to give me that wonderful little movement that makes an arrangement feel natural.
I know these flowers because I grew them.
When a wedding is coming up, I am watching the fields differently. I’m thinking about what will be blooming, what colors will be at their best, and which flowers will bring something special to that particular wedding.
That knowledge becomes part of the design.
So when I put a bouquet together, I’m not simply choosing beautiful flowers. I’m choosing from flowers I’ve watched develop from a tiny plant into something ready to be part of a celebration.
